A Halo naevus, also known as a halo mole, is a skin condition where a mole (naevus) is surrounded by a light depigmented ring or 'halo'.
Symptoms
- Central Mole: A distinct, often dark-colored mole.
- Depigmentation: A light or white ring around the mole.
- Changes: The mole may change in size or color over time.
Causes
The exact cause of a Halo naevus is not fully understood, but it is often associated with an immune response where the body attacks the pigment cells in and around the mole.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually made based on the appearance of the skin. A dermatologist may perform a skin examination, and sometimes a biopsy is taken to rule out other skin conditions.
Treatment
The spots are benign and usually disappear on their own after years. Treatment is usually not necessary unless the moles are cosmetically bothersome or show changes indicative of skin cancer.
Self-Care Tips
- Sun Protection: Use sunscreen to protect the skin from UV radiation.
- Skin Inspection: Monitor changes in the mole and consult a doctor if in doubt.
