Lichen Planus

Lichen planus, also known as "lichen ruber planus," is a chronic, itchy inflammatory disease of the skin and mucous membranes. The term "lichen ruber planus" literally means "hardened red flat bumps," which accurately describes how the condition appears. It is estimated to affect around 1% of the world's population. People of all races, both men and women, can develop this condition, typically around middle age (between 30 and 60 years old). Studies have so far not identified a hereditary factor for this skin disease. Lichen planus is not contagious.

Symptoms

Lichen planus is a non-infectious skin condition characterized by itchy, flat, purplish bumps on the skin. It can also affect the mouth, genital area, and scalp. Symptoms include:

  • Itchy, purple, flat bumps often on the inner wrists, legs, torso, or genitals.
  • White lines or spots in the mouth or on the lips.
  • Painful, burning mouth.
  • Thinning hair or hair loss on the scalp.
  • Nail changes such as ridges, thickening, or loss of nails.

Causes

The exact cause of lichen planus is unknown, but it appears to be related to an immune response. Genetic factors may also play a role.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves:

  • Physical examination of the skin, mouth, and possibly other affected areas.
  • Skin biopsy to rule out other skin conditions.
  • Blood tests if an underlying condition is suspected.

Treatment

  • Corticosteroid creams or ointments for the skin.
  • Corticosteroids, pain relievers, or mouthwashes for mouth issues.
  • Medicinal treatment with cyclosporine.
  • Light therapy.

Self-Care Tips

  • Avoid scratching the affected areas.
  • Use mild, non-irritating soap and skin care products.
  • Wear comfortable, non-abrasive clothing.
  • Manage stress, as it can exacerbate symptoms.
