Peri-anal Thrombosis

Peri-anal thrombosis, also known as a thrombosed hemorrhoid, is a sudden swelling near the anus caused by a blood clot in an external blood vessel. This results in a hard, bluish or purple lump that can be painful and tender, especially when sitting or during bowel movements. The condition is harmless and often resolves on its own within a few weeks, but in some cases, medical treatment may be needed to relieve pain.

Symptoms:

  • Pain around the anus, especially when sitting or during bowel movements.
  • Swelling and/or a palpable lump near the anus that can appear suddenly.
  • Itching or discomfort in the affected area.
  • Bleeding may sometimes occur, especially after bowel movements.

Causes:

  • Prolonged sitting or standing, which increases pressure on the veins.
  • Constipation or straining during bowel movements.
  • Pregnancy and the postpartum period due to increased pressure in the pelvic area.
  • Being overweight, which puts extra pressure on the veins.
  • A family history of similar conditions may also play a role.

Diagnosis:

Perianal vein thrombosis is usually diagnosed through a physical examination by a doctor, who will inspect the affected area and ask about symptoms and medical history. Additional testing may be necessary to rule out other conditions.

Treatment:

  • Pain relievers such as acetaminophen to alleviate pain.
  • Warm baths to reduce pain and discomfort.
  • In some cases, surgical removal of the thrombosis may be necessary, especially if there is severe pain or complications.

Self-Care Tips:

  • Avoid prolonged sitting or standing. Take regular breaks to move around.
  • Drink plenty of water and eat a fiber-rich diet to prevent constipation.
  • Use soft toilet paper or moist wipes to reduce irritation.
  • Take warm sit baths to help relieve pain.

E-mail advice

An email advice allows you to receive a professional assessment from a certified dermatologist via email within two working days. You will complete a questionnaire describing your skin concern, and the doctor will provide their evaluation and recommendations in writing.

Physical Consultation

A physical consultation involves an in-person visit to the doctor's clinic or designated location. You will have the opportunity to discuss your skin concerns face-to-face and receive a thorough examination and treatment plan.

Video Consultation

A video consultation enables you to have a remote appointment with the doctor via a secure video platform. This option provides convenience and flexibility, allowing you to discuss your skin concerns from the comfort of your own home.
