Shingles is a skin disease that causes itching, pain, and a rash with blisters, usually on one side of your body. It is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox, the virus can remain in your body and later cause shingles.
Symptoms
- Pain, burning, tingling, or itching in a specific area on your skin
- A red rash that turns into blisters after a few days
- Fluid-filled blisters that can open and form crusts
- Fever, headache, and fatigue (sometimes)
Causes
After chickenpox, the virus remains in your nerve cells. It can become active again and cause shingles. This can be due to stress, a weakened immune system, or age.
Diagnosis
A doctor can usually recognize shingles by the rash. Sometimes, the doctor takes a swab of the blisters to test for the virus.
Treatment
Shingles is sometimes treated with antiviral medications, pain relievers, and topical creams.
Self-care Tips
- Keep the skin clean and dry
- Gently apply a cold compress to the blisters to relieve pain
- Wear loose clothing to avoid irritation
- Ensure adequate rest to help your body heal
