Verruca Vulgaris

Verruca Vulgaris, also known as a common wart, is a skin infection caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). These warts typically appear on the hands, fingers, and around the nails, but can also appear elsewhere on the body. They are usually hard, with a rough surface, and contain small black dots.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Verruca Vulgaris include:

  • Small, hard bumps on the skin, often with a rough surface
  • Bumps that may be grayish-yellow or brown in color
  • Black dots in the wart, which are small clotted blood vessels
  • Possible pain or discomfort when walking or applying pressure to the wart

These symptoms usually develop slowly and can vary in size and number.

Causes

Verruca Vulgaris is caused by an infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus spreads through direct contact with the wart or with surfaces that have come into contact with the virus. There are more than 100 types of HPV, but only a few cause warts on the hands or feet. Individuals with weaker immune systems may be more susceptible to the virus.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Verruca Vulgaris is typically based on the appearance of the wart. A doctor can confirm the diagnosis by carefully examining the wart. In rare cases, a biopsy may be performed to rule out other skin conditions.

Treatment

Treatment options for Verruca Vulgaris include:

  • Cryotherapy: freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen
  • Salicylic acid: a medication that helps to peel away the wart layer by layer
  • Laser therapy: using an intense beam of light to destroy the wart
  • Surgical removal: surgically removing the wart when other treatments are not effective

Self-care Tips

Some self-care tips include:

  • Avoid scratching or picking at the warts
  • Use separate towels for your warts and the rest of your body
  • Keep the skin dry and clean
  • Cover warts with waterproof bandages when swimming
  • Wear slippers in communal showers and locker rooms

Other

Verruca Vulgaris can vary in size and sometimes disappear on its own. It is important to take measures to prevent spreading it to other parts of your body or to other people.
